If you’ve ever had a hard time helping your child with their science fair project, there are plenty of online resources that can help make things a lot easier. Whether you need an idea, or a step-by-step guide, there are several websites that can really make the whole process a lot easier for you and your child.

Ideas & Procedure

Some sites can be used to help generate ideas for a science project. Science Buddies breaks down the complete process, with projects categorized by scientific topic, step-by-step how-to guides, essential background information, and required materials. It is completely kid-friendly and easy to navigate, allowing students to go through the process on their own.

In association with Discovery Channel, Discovery Education has an entire section of their website devoted to science fair projects, called Science Fair Central. This website targets older students, but it still provides you with the step-by-step process of choosing a topic, performing the investigation through the scientific process, and creating a presentation.

Materials & Equipment

Home Science Tools offers a resource for science projects, but they primarily operate as a provider of science supplies for at-home experiments. Their online store allows you to filter by age level, experience, price, and more, in order to find the right equipment for your student. They even have kits available that come with pre-prepared supplies for students to conduct specific experiments. Much of their equipment is aimed at older students who are serious about scientific procedures, but there is a section devoted to science fair equipment.

Home Science Tools even has a rewards program if you plan to be a frequent customer. Discovery Education also provides coupons for parents to use on relevant project equipment. Aimed with younger students in mind, Discount School Supply offers simpler equipment for various scientific activities. They also provide presentation materials similar to the supplies that businesses like Staples, Office Depot, and Officemax sell.

Reports & Templates

When it comes time to put together the report and presentation, there are a few resources that can help you and your child through the process. Science Fair Extravaganza, developed by the Illinois Institute of Technology, is a very useful website that will take you through the entire science fair project process, with specific attention paid to the formatting of the report and the display layout. The website provides visual aides to help create the presentation, and offers a breakdown of different points to hit on during the course of the report, even offering help with citing sources.

Developing and producing a fun and creative science fair project can be extremely difficult and time consuming for both parent and student. With the right resources, you can save yourself a lot of time figuring out what to do, and spend more time getting the project done.
